Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions: The Small Labels That Explain a Page

A meta title (often called a title tag) is the page label browsers and search results may show. A meta description is a short page summary that search engines may use in a result snippet. They help explain the page; they do not guarantee a ranking or force Google to use your exact wording.

Why they matter

  • A clear title helps people and search engines identify the page topic.
  • A useful description can make a search result easier to understand before someone clicks.
  • Unique labels help you avoid a site where every page looks identical from the outside.

Editing guidelines

  • Give each important page its own accurate title.
  • Lead with the service, product, or topic; add location or brand when helpful.
  • Write the description for a human deciding whether the page answers their question.
  • Match the page content. A tempting snippet that sends people to the wrong thing is not a win.

Examples

Service page title

Emergency Plumber in Phoenix | Smith Plumbing

Service page description

The honest ranking note

Search engines may rewrite snippets and use many signals beyond a title or description. Editing these fields is a clarity improvement, not a promise that your page will jump to the top.
